Introduction

Dr Balram Airan is an Alumni from AIIMS, New Delhi, India. During his tenure at AIIMS, he has served the institute as an Interim Director, Dean (Academic), Chief Cardio Thoracic Centre and Professor & HOD, CTVS. He has been the member of various Academic and Administrative Committees of AIIMS and other public and private institutions. During his tenure as a Dean, he was instrumental in initiating a number of new academic courses and increased academic seats. During his tenure as chief CTC, the centre achieved excellence in all the spheres in all the eight departments under the centre. It is considered as the best centre for the academic, research and training activities in the field of Cardio Vascular Sciences. He has also served as President of IACTS, member of the Apex Technical Committee of NOTTO under DGHS & member of the Academic Council of IACTS.

He has been the founder member of World Society of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Society of Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgeons and many more scientific organizations besides being on the editorial board of Annals of Paediatric Cardiology. During his tenure, he has received various awards and honours.

He has been an excellent Academician, Clinician, Researcher and an able Administrator. He has performed more than 25000 cardiac operations and his special areas of interest include CABG, Cardiac Transplant, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery for all the simple as well as complex congenital cardiac diseases, Myocardial Preservation, Valvular Conservative Surgery, VAD and Stem Cell Therapy.

He has trained more than 150 students who now occupy prestigious positions in India and abroad. He is instrumental in training more than 100 National and International short-term trainees in CTVS from various centres including from SAARC Countries, Kenya, North Korea and Nigeria. He has also helped to develop CTVS Departments in various institutions in the country. He has to his credit various National and International projects of high repute as Principal/Co-investigator. He has published more than 300 research papers in peer reviewed National and International Journals with high impact factor besides writing chapters in books. He has been a guest speaker at National and International forums.

After Superannuation from AIIMS he was the Professor and Head, Department of CTVS and Director, Heart and Lung Transplant program at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Mahatma Gandhi University of Medical Sciences & Technology at Jaipur, India. He has been the visiting consultant at Artemis Hospital and FMRI Gurgaon, Haryana and currently at National Heart Institute, New Delhi.
